Reverse buckling bursting discs
For applications containing alternating or high temperatures and/or alternating loads reverse buckling bursting discs are the most suitable type. They work according to the Euler buckling pin principle: they are cambered against the pressure direction and on reaching the burst pressure the disc buckles and opens at a prescored fracture line.Reverse buckling discs are scored full metall discs. They are very resistant against high operating pressures, alternating loads and high operating temperatures. In this state of stress, material creep and fatigue are considerably less than in case of the bursting discs subjected to tensile loading. That is why reverse buckling discs are more durable. The elasticity modulus is also less temperature-dependant than the tensile strength, so the bursting pressures of reverse buckling discs are stable over a wide temperature range.
These advantages are offset somewhat by the following restrictions:
1. a higher minimum burst pressure than in case of a composite bursting disc
2. there must be a gas cushion underneath the bursting disc
3. a holder is required so the burst pressure of the disc can be guaranteed
