Installation of bursting discs
The right method of installation is
determinative for optimal usage of bursting discs. Bursting discs with
nominal widths of over 25 mm, such as are used in the chemical industry
for making safe reactors and transport tanks, are usually installed
between standard flanges. A special holder is often necessary for this
purpose. Schlesinger bursting discs can in most cases be installed
directly between flanges. This not only saves costs, but also increases
flexibility for the customer. However, there are designs of bursting
discs which require a special holder into which the bursting discs are
inserted before the complete bursting device is clamped between flanges:
- when a signal transmitter is required
- when reverse bursting discs are used (in most cases)
- for rupturing disks with very high burst pressures (pre-cambered bursting disks)
Care must be taken when installing a
bursting disc before a safety valve that the enclosed pressurised area
between the bursting disc and the safety valve must be monitored and,
if appropriate, ventilated with an overflow valve. Bursting discs
before safety valves must open fragmentation-free, for which reason it
is absolutely necessary to inform us of the installation situation. For
small bursting discs a very wide variety of installation options arise:
- in standardised fittings such as locking ring-manometer fittings or VCR fittings
- in special fittings (high pressure fittings or special designs) as bursting plugs simply installed in a threaded screw
- between the different clamp fittings
- all-metal designs can be welded on
In all events, care must be taken that
the circumstances in our test fitting are identical to the installation
situation at the customer, since otherwise the assured properties are
not guaranteed.
All types of installation can be inspected with a helium sealing test.
It is important that the identification must not be concealed by the installation.
